Beginning Again
August 2007

It is time once again for our Christian Education programs to begin for the fall. Even those churches that continue all the programs during the summer usually do something to make the fall a new beginning. I hope there is excitement in your church about this new beginning.

Making certain that we are ready to go is one of the things that brings that sense of excitement: teachers assigned to each class, new curriculum books, new supplies, new pictures, etc. It tells us something is going to happen here! Let me make a few suggestions of some things I hope you are thinking about.

Sunday School Superintendents:

  • Talk to your pastor about dedicating your teachers/leaders during a worship service. Be sure to include Bible Study leaders, youth workers, etc., as well as Sunday School teachers.

  • Consider your age groupings. If you do not have enough persons in one group, or you do not have enough leaders available to do a good job, consider how you might organize in another way. Materials are now available for "one-room" Sunday Schools. Or try a "centers approach" so that learners have more choices and activities can cover a broader age grouping.

  • Plan some training events for your leaders during the year. Don't forget to include others who might be interested in teaching! These events could take many different forms. For example:

  • Workshops available through American Baptist Churches USA in the past were called "Training Time Workshops." Many of those have been revised and are available now as "NM's Workshops for Church Life and Leadership." You may download them from the National Ministries website: http://www.nationalministries.org/resources/church_life_leadership/index.cfm. These workshops can be used as-is or modified. All materials may be photocopied.

  • Plan a time for teachers to meet together to pray and plan for any special events that may be coming up. This could be done as a simple breakfast meeting before the first day of Sunday School or another convenient time. Make it a short meeting!

  • Invite all classes to participate in a special project of mutual interest. It could be a mission project, local or global, or it could be something for your own local church or neighborhood.

  • Make sure attendance books are ready to go and that supplies are available for all classes.

Teachers:

  • Prepare your room for your class. Make certain it is welcoming! Some new pictures on the wall, their names on a chart on the door, or a new arrangement will add interest to the room. Remember that for young children, primary colors are best: red, green, yellow, blue.

  • Be early! There should be someone to welcome the class when they come.

  • Have supplies in your room and ready to use. If possible, have a seating area for stories and discussion, as well as a table for work on projects, etc.

Here are just a few ideas to "prime the pump." What are you doing that you could share with others? Let me know if I can help.
