First Baptist Church of Madison, in response to the unconditional love of God, invites all people, regardless of race, culture, gender, marital status, or sexual orientation, to unite as full participants in this Christian fellowship in which we enjoy the saving grace made known in Jesus Christ; allow Christ to shape our lives as we grow in faith, service and discipleship; and join together in the work of God in the world, striving to live as witnesses to God's love.
FBC, of Madison, WI, officially began as the Baptist Society of Madison on December 23, 1847. Through the years, in four buildings at three locations, it has sustained its members, witnessed to Baptist faith and principles, and served its community, state and the world.
The 150th anniversary celebrated hallmarks of our church's character: life-long commitments of faithful members who love and work for their church; accepting differences (theological, political and personal) as cause for celebration; visions of service beyond the walls of the church; support of a free pulpit where pastors witness their deepest convictions without fear of repercussions; caring members who lovingly support each other in times of joy and sorrow, who help each other grow in spirit, patience, forgiveness, and understanding of what it means to be Christian; and a welcoming spirit to all who would join us in Christ's work.
Over the years, FBC has developed strong youth programs, plus a strong campus ministry that grew out of them. For over 25 years, FBC has hosted English as a Second language classes for spouses of international students in conjunction with Madison Friends of International Students, reaching people from over 100 countries. Their education program includes strong adult classes as well as children's departments. Topics cover not only Bible study but also world events, social justice issues and modern society. The church uses classes as springboards to action.
At First Baptist, we hold diverse positions, and often take different stands, but we try to recognize the worth of each other and that we are all children of God, diverse in outlook, "One in the Spirit".
