INTERDEPENDENCE DAY

Yes, I know July 4th is Independence Day, not Interdependence Day, but there are many days I wish we understood much more about working with and relying on each other. Out society is an example of "me first" or "us first" run amok.

Violence on the streets ,at soccer games or on the interstate illustrates only too well our self-centered drive.

It is tempting to launch into a couple paragraphs about our nation's actions around the world-but then I would be labeled as un-patriotic. Suffice it to say it is no surprise to me that in many parts of the world our nation is not well received. Our church life reflects our "me first" attitude as well. Every congregation I know says they want more young people and that they want to grow. Yet when faced with the reality of the changes it would take to provide the potential for growth the statements begin to come: "I" don't like doing that kind of outreach. "I'm" tired. "I'm " too old. "I" don't like the praise music, "I" won't give my offerings if that is the direction "they" go.

Quite the attitudes for people seeking to follow Jesus. We are called to be a community under the guidance of the Holy Spirit-a unifying Spirit. We are to study God's Scripture to find our way in this world. But somewhere we've missed the point of much of it.

Celebrate the 4th of July. But, reflect on the possibilities of being more INTERdependent in all areas of life, I believe it will please God.
