BELIEVER'S BAPTISM...A BAPTIST DISTINCTIVE

One of the points that separated some of the early reformers in Europe from other reformers was baptism. As scripture was studied it became apparent to some that the practice of infant baptism was not scriptural. Some early reformers baptized by pouring water over the heads of new converts and some by immersion.

Baptism of believers has endured as one of the Biblically-based Baptist beliefs through hundreds of years. Some churches have come to accept adults upon confession of faith who had earlier experienced "infant" baptism, respecting their adult testimony. These are "open membership" congregations.

Yet, believers baptism is "ours" as Baptists. My own baptism by immersion is still a vivid, wonderful memory though it was in 1958. As a pastor I have baptized more than 100-a very special experience.

In 1998 American Baptists had a vision that became known as New Life 2010. It calls us to seek by the year 2010 to make 1,00,010 new disciples, plant 1010 new congregations, and begin a myriad of new caring ministries.
As the church annual report forms come in I look at and rejoice at each new life in Christ represented by the statistics under "baptisms". Within our total ABCUSA family from 1998 through 2004 we can celebrate 386,156 new believers.

1998:
52,012
2002:
52,236
1999:
52,010
2003:
61,936
2000:
46,863
2004:
63,359
2001:
57,740
2005:
TBA

Send us your report if you have not does so already so we along with the rest of our ABC family can rejoice.
