Chronicles 16:7-15
At that time David began the custom of using choirs in the Tabernacle
to sing thanksgiving to the Lord. Asaph was the director of this choral
group of priests. "Oh give thanks to the Lord and pray to him,"
they sang. "Tell the peoples of the world about His mighty doings.
Sing to Him, yes, sing His praises and tell of His marvelous works.
Glory in His holy name. Let all rejoice who seek the Lord. Seek the
Lord; yes, seek His strength and seek His face untiringly. O descendants
of His servant Abraham, O chosen sons of Jacob, remember His mighty
miracles and His marvelous miracles and His authority: He is the Lord
our God! His authority is seen throughout the earth. Remember His
covenant forever"
Give thanks - Pray - Tell the people
Seek the Lord - Remember His miracles and His covenant. This is what
the choir sang in the Tabernacle at the time of David. What a clear,
simple prescription for all of us. When we awake, we should immediately
give thanks for another day and pray for strength to see us through.
Throughout the day, we should "tell the people"' by our
words and actions that we are Christians. Seize each opportunity to
be Christ's light in this dark world. Continue to seek the Lord in
prayer, devotions and worship so we might continue to grow in our
own faith. Always remember our God is a god of miracles great and
small. Appreciate them. Remember the covenant Christ proclaimed at
the Last Supper - a new covenant sealed with the sacrifice of His
blood.
Let this scripture help us grow in
faith and love, whether we are in the choir or in the pew!
BOOK ALERT -Preaching
to the Choir: The Care and Nurture of the Church Choir
by Wayne Wold. Augsburg Press, ISBN # 0806646756
We all have plenty of "how-to"
books that we have purchased and perhaps never used. This book is
more of a "why-to" book, examining why we do what we do
as musicians. Plenty of practical advice delivered in a sometimes
humorous way lies in these pages. More importantly, Wold examines
the pastoral side of being involved in church music ministry. A quick
read (96 pgs.) that requires some slow reflection.
MUSIC ALERT- "Jesus
Loves Me" Michael Hassell,
Augsburg SATB/saxophone
Yes, it is the traditional children's
song but with the addition of the saxophone, it becomes much more.
A soft jazz style allows your adult choir to express their child-like
faith and will provide your congregation with a new twist on an old
standard. The accompaniment is quite accessible. This would be a great
choice for a combined service or festival choir.
