Updates From June Board Of Managers' Meeting

  • Accepted True Worshipers Community Church of Fitchburg, Larry V. Jackson, pastor, as a fully cooperating congregation. This new church plant formed in 2003.

  • Voted to recommend the merger of the Commissions on Congregational Ministries and Outreach into the Commission on Congregational Mission. The annual meeting delegates must approve recommendation.

  • Empowered the Commission on Finance to negotiate with the WI Dept. of Natural Resources for the sale of approximately 14.6 acres in the Town of Dayton to extend the state nature preserve.

  • Approved start up of a campaign to support the education of persons preparing for and pursuing professional church ministry.

  • Reaffirmed region annual meeting dates continuing in October

  • Received good financial news from 2006 due to solid church mission giving and investment returns.

  • Heard an ABC-USA update from Peter Wolf, ABC/WI general board representative and president of the ABC-USA Board of National Ministries

  • Heard of the ministry of Housing Ministries of American Baptists in Wisconsin who hosted the meeting at Northport Community Center in Madison

  • Listened to reports from staff, organizations, associations, commissions.

Fall Seminary Classes Open To Lifelong Learners

People with a bachelors degree may now participate as Lifelong Learners. They are not required to complete assignments other than read the text and participate in class.

Series One: Sept. 7-8, 14-15, 28-29, Oct. 5-6 and 20

  • Hebrew Bible I (Old Testament) taught by Timothy Ashley
  • Homiletics taught by Eleanor Cardenas

Series Two: Nov. 9-10, 16-17, 30-Dec. 1, 7-8, 22

  • Christian Heritage I (Church History) taught by Adam Bond
  • Christian Witness taught by Carmen Porco and Trinette McCray

Classes meet Fri. 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm and Sat. 8:30 am to 1:30 pm at the region office. The cost is $300/course. Pastors in congregations averaging 100 or fewer in worship qualify for Blumer Continuing Education Scholarships. Application forms, available at the region office, must be completed by August 1st.

News About Churches and People

Neil Wilson is serving as interim pastor during the May-July sabbatical of Karen Gygax-Rodriquez at Green Lake-Federated.

Dalvery Blackwell, Milwaukee-Community of Greater Milw., Annette Madison, Milwaukee-Calvary, Carmen Porco, Madison-First and Pat Steele, Vicki Davidson and Jacki Thomas, Housing Ministries of American Baptist in Wisconsin attended the "Transforming Communities for Children" training in Valley Forge, PA during May representing ABC/WI.

Charles Thornhill, Milwaukee-Mt. Moriah, traveled to Cambridge, MA for the installation of his niece as pastor of the Massachusetts Ave. Baptist Church (ABC).

John Jones, West Allis-First, was a delegate to the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Faith and Order Commission of the National Council of Churches held in June.

Joyce Lawlor has been named Spirit Care Provider for members of Milwaukee-Bay View. She will also be available to provide educational opportunities to other ABC/WI congregations and leaders in the area of Spirit Care.

Congratulations to James Williams, Milwaukee-Calvary, who recently graduated from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary with the Master of Divinity degree.
