“Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path,” Psalm 119:105
I know, this may be a silly question. If you have the ability of sight, of course
when you look downward you can locate your feet….only if there is enough light to
view them. It’s pretty risky when you can’t see your feet, nor the path that your feet
are treading whilst in complete darkness. In this since, I’m talking both physically and
spiritually. The reality is darkness is inevitable. It exists, and at some point, we will, in
some fashion, bump up against many types of darkness as we navigate the hills and
valleys of this world.
The fallen condition of our humanity is the hate, greed, lust for power &
destruction, with the sole purpose to divide even to the extent of violence. Humanity
wrestles with holding on to its own darkness while seeking its own justification to exist
as sanctimonious, void of the guiding conviction and saving light of God’s Word. A
confusing recipe for disaster and chaos as we see daily.
How bright is the light around your feet these days? As the season rapidly
changes, we must consider the world’s growing challenges. It’s imperative that those
who love God’s Word stand on God’s Word. And even more so, stand of the God
of the Word! When we do, we find God’s guidance, instruction and life-giving hope.
We find the truth!
The light that we carry through God’s Word can be used to orchestrate how
light is shown in the darkness & hopelessness that we face. When we truly know
God’s Word, we do the work of lighting the path & driving out the darkness-be it our
own, and for those around us.
As a child, I proudly recited this verse in Sunday School from memory which
felt like a badge of honor! Some 30 years later, I am compelled to ask, how much
light is on MY feet even as I live amongst those who cannot see? How sufficiently am
I using the lamp on my path in this ominously changing world?
The good news: Gods Word never changes and always does the work no
matter how dark it gets! I’m encouraged that even though my feet may walk through
darkness, my feet won’t be overwhelmed by the darkness because the Word (the
Light) is hidden in my heart!
